Mission Dolores Basilica, completed in 1918, stands as the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco. Originally established in 1776 as Mission San Francisco de Asís by Franciscan missionaries, it represents a significant period of Spanish colonial history in California. The current basilica incorporates elements of several architectural styles including Renaissance Revival and Moorish Revival. Its interior features extensive murals painted by Italian artists between 1960 and 1968, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and the history of the mission.
