Little Island is a public park in Hudson River Park, located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Opened in May 2021, it was designed by Heatherwick Studio and features a unique undulating landscape built on 199 tulip-shaped concrete piles driven into the riverbed. Originally conceived as Pier 55, the project faced significant financial hurdles during its development. The park’s design intentionally creates diverse microclimates and performance spaces intended to host artistic and cultural events. Its construction aimed to revitalize a previously dilapidated pier and provide public access to the waterfront with an emphasis on natural landscaping and community engagement. It is operated by the Hudson River Park Trust.
