Symphony Hall itself opened in 1900 and is considered one of the most acoustically perfect concert venues in the world. Designed by William Gibbons Preston, its acoustics were largely shaped through the advice of Wallace Clement Sabine, considered the “father of architectural acoustics.” Sabine’s work focused on minimizing reverberation and maximizing clarity, resulting in a hall celebrated for its natural sound without the need for electronic amplification. The hall's design incorporates a shoebox shape and specific materials chosen for their acoustic properties. It has served as the primary performance space for the Boston Symphony Orchestra since its opening and is a National Historic Landmark. The interior features ornate detailing and gold leaf ornamentation reflective of the Beaux-Arts architectural style prevalent at the time of construction.
