The Boston Symphony Orchestra will perform at Symphony Hall on January 21, 2027. The Boston Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1881, is internationally renowned for its distinctive sound—often characterized by rich string tone and a robust brass section—and commitment to both standard repertoire and contemporary works. Throughout its history, the orchestra has been associated with conductors like Arthur Fiedler, Serge Koussevitzky, and Leonard Bernstein, each contributing to its evolving musical identity.

Symphony Hall itself holds significant historical and acoustic importance. Completed in 1900, it was designed by McKim, Mead & White and is widely considered one of the most acoustically perfect concert halls in the world. This reputation stems from its “shoebox” design – a relatively narrow and rectangular space – and the careful attention paid to materials during construction. The hall’s acoustics were notably praised early on by conductor Wilhelm Gericke who declared it had “the most perfect acoustic conditions I have ever experienced.” It has been the primary performance venue for the Boston Symphony Orchestra since its opening and continues to host a variety of musical performances beyond the orchestra’s own season. The hall is also a National Historic Landmark.
