The Toronto Music Garden is a unique public space combining a botanical garden with a fully functional musical instrument. Designed by landscape architect Julie Moir Messervy in collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, it translates J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 1 for Unaccompanied Cello into a three-dimensional landscape. Pathways represent the cello’s melodic lines, flowerbeds denote harmonic structures, and sculpted landforms correspond to rhythmic patterns.

Opened in 1999, the garden is located within Edwards Gardens in Toronto, Ontario. It aims to demonstrate the interconnectedness of music and nature, offering visitors an immersive experience where they can ‘walk through’ Bach’s music.
