Experience Zakiya Hooker

Zakiya Hooker (born Zakiya Young, July 28, 1958 – November 23, 2023) was an American blues and R&B singer-songwriter, widely recognized as the daughter of blues legend John Lee Hooker. While initially hesitant to follow in her father’s footsteps, she began performing professionally in the 1990s, eventually releasing her debut album *Like a Songbird* in 1997 on Varèse Sarabande.

Hooker’s style blended traditional blues foundations with elements of soul, gospel, and a distinctly contemporary edge. Her powerful vocals and emotive delivery earned her critical acclaim and comparisons to artists like Bonnie Raitt. She toured extensively both as a solo artist and alongside her father during his later years, gaining valuable stage experience and broadening her audience.

Further albums included *Blue Blood* (2004) and *Ready to Talk* (2016). Zakiya received a W.C. Handy Award nomination for Blues Female Artist of the Year in 2005. Beyond recording, she was a dedicated advocate for blues music education and preservation throughout her career.
