Experience Yasuaki Shimizu

Yasuaki Shimizu (清水 靖晃) is a highly influential Japanese composer, arranger, and saxophonist pivotal in the development of Japanese city pop and fusion jazz. Emerging in the late 1970s, Shimizu initially gained recognition as an arranger for prominent artists like Haruomi Hosono and Akiko Yano, contributing significantly to their sophisticated sound.

He launched his solo career in 1981 with *Terminal Paradise*, showcasing a unique blend of jazz harmony, funk grooves, bossa nova rhythms, and electronic textures. Throughout the 80s, albums like *Music Voyager* and *Fantasia* further cemented his signature style – characterized by intricate arrangements, atmospheric synthesizers, and his distinctive tenor saxophone playing.

Shimizu’s work frequently incorporated elements of environmental sounds and field recordings, creating immersive sonic landscapes. Though relatively under-the-radar internationally during his initial peak, his music experienced a significant resurgence in popularity in the 2010s with the global revival of city pop. He continues to perform and release new material, maintaining a dedicated following and inspiring contemporary artists across genres. His influence is widely acknowledged within Japanese music history and increasingly recognized globally.
