Experience Willie J. Laws
Willie J. Laws (born William Joseph Laws, October 28, 1940 – July 28, 2009) was an American soul and funk musician, primarily known for his work as a singer, songwriter, and bandleader. Rising from the vibrant Chicago soul scene of the 1960s, Laws initially gained recognition fronting The Willie J. Laws Ensemble. He signed with Columbia Records in 1966, releasing several singles including the regionally popular “Spillin’ the Beans.”
Laws' music blends elements of soul, funk, jazz and blues, characterized by his smooth tenor vocals and sophisticated arrangements. While never achieving mainstream superstardom, he enjoyed consistent success as a performer and songwriter for other artists. He later founded his own label, Laws Records, allowing him greater creative control.
Throughout the 70s and 80s, he continued to record and perform extensively on the Chicago circuit. A resurgence of interest came with compilation albums featuring his earlier work in the 1990s and beyond, introducing him to a new generation of soul enthusiasts. His songs have been sampled by contemporary artists demonstrating his lasting influence on modern music.
