Willem Heylen is a Belgian multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer renowned for his deeply atmospheric and often melancholic instrumental music. Emerging in the late 1990s, Heylen initially gained recognition as a member of the progressive rock band Univers Zero, contributing keyboards and arrangements to their critically acclaimed albums like *Uzeda* (1993) and *Ellipse* (1996).

However, he’s best known for his extensive solo work, beginning with *Microphonie* (2001). His compositions blend elements of ambient, dark ambient, neoclassical, and minimalist music, frequently utilizing piano, organ, and electronic textures. He avoids traditional song structures, prioritizing mood and sonic exploration.

Heylen has released over twenty solo albums on labels including Cold Meat Industry/Cyclic Law and Projekt Records. He’s collaborated with artists like Lustmord and Raison d'être, further solidifying his position within the broader dark ambient community. His music has been featured in film soundtracks and art installations. A prolific artist consistently praised for his evocative soundscapes, Heylen continues to release new material and tour internationally.
