The Minus 5 is a power pop project founded in 1998 by Scott McCaughey (The Young Fresh Fellows, The Baseball Project) as a vehicle for collaborative songwriting and recording. Initially conceived to fulfill contractual obligations to Radar Records, it quickly evolved into a rotating cast of prominent indie rock musicians. Core contributors have included members of R.E.M. (Peter Buck), Wilco (Ken Coomer), The Posies (Jon Auer & Rick Powell), and Letters to Cleo (Greg Hawkes), among many others.
Their sound blends classic British Invasion melodies with American power pop sensibilities, often described as reminiscent of Badfinger or The Raspberries but with a distinctly indie edge. The band has released eight studio albums, beginning with *Upbeat Measures* (1998) and most recently *Dial M For Murder* (2017).
The Minus 5 are known for their prolific output of B-sides and cover songs alongside original material, often released on limited edition vinyl. They've garnered critical acclaim for their consistently strong songwriting and arrangements, establishing themselves as a beloved cult favorite within the power pop community.
