Experience Sergio Mendes
Sergio Mendes is a Brazilian pianist, composer, and bandleader who achieved international fame blending bossa nova, samba, and jazz with pop sensibilities. Beginning his career in the late 1950s with the group Bossa Rio, Mendes rose to prominence in the 1960s with Brasil '66, introducing Brazilian music to a global audience through hits like "Mas Que Nada" and "The Look of Love."
His sound is characterized by vibrant piano arrangements, layered percussion, and often features female vocalists – notably Lani Hall, his wife – creating a sophisticated yet accessible style. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Mendes continued innovating, incorporating funk and disco influences while maintaining his core Brazilian roots.
He’s collaborated with artists across genres including Quincy Jones, Will Smith (re-popularizing “Mas Que Nada” for *Bad Boys*), and Black Eyed Peas. Mendes has received Grammy Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018) and nominations throughout his six-decade career. He remains an active performer and advocate for Brazilian music globally, consistently touring and releasing new material.
