Experience Seckou Keita
Seckou Keita is a globally renowned Senegalese kora player and percussionist, considered a leading figure in contemporary West African music. Born into a lineage of griots (hereditary musicians and storytellers), Keita began playing the kora at age seven, mastering traditional techniques before forging his own innovative style.
He moved to the UK in 1999 and quickly became a sought-after collaborator, working with artists across genres – from jazz saxophonist Yusef Lateef to contemporary classical composer Nitin Sawhney. Keita’s solo career blossomed with albums like *Nephew of the Eagle* (2006) and *M’Bolo* (2013), earning him widespread critical acclaim and BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.
His music blends traditional Mandinka repertoire with influences from jazz, blues, and classical music, characterized by intricate kora melodies, driving rhythms, and powerful vocals (often sung in Mandinka). He co-founded the acclaimed group Seru Gi, showcasing his compositional talents. Keita's performances are known for their captivating energy and spiritual depth, consistently pushing the boundaries of kora playing while honoring its rich heritage.
