Experience Ruth Wyand
Ruth Wyand (born Ruth Elizabeth Wyand, October 12, 1926 – July 28, 2023) was an American jazz pianist and educator renowned for her stride piano style and dedication to preserving early jazz traditions. Primarily active from the 1940s through the 2010s, Wyand began playing professionally at age 13, initially performing with her family ensemble. She became a prominent figure in the New York City jazz scene, frequently performing at clubs like Jimmy Ryan’s and Eddie Condon’s.
Wyand's playing was deeply rooted in the techniques of Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, showcasing virtuosic left-hand technique and joyful improvisation. While recording as a leader infrequently – notable albums include *I Hear Music* (1979) and *Ruth Wyand!* (1985) – she was a sought-after accompanist for vocalists like Vernel Bagneris and contributed to numerous studio sessions.
Beyond performance, Wyand dedicated decades to jazz education, teaching privately and at workshops.
