Experience Ricky Cool and the In Crowd
Ricky Cool & The In Crowd were a prominent soul and R&B vocal group from Baltimore, Maryland, active primarily during the 1960s. Formed around vocalist Ricky Cool (Richard Knight), the group initially gained local recognition performing at clubs and dances throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Their signature sound blended smooth vocal harmonies with energetic arrangements, drawing heavily from influences like Sam Cooke and The Temptations.
They achieved national success in 1967 with their single “Walk Like a Man,” reaching #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Subsequent singles like "I Get So Excited" and “Painted Picture” also charted, though didn’t replicate the initial hit’s success. The group recorded for Atlantic Records and later Brunswick Records.
Known for their sharp suits and polished stage presence, Ricky Cool & The In Crowd toured extensively, opening for major acts of the era. Though their mainstream popularity waned in the early 1970s, they continued to perform regionally and remain highly regarded among collectors of classic soul music. Ricky Cool continued performing sporadically until his death in 2013, preserving the legacy of the In Crowd's vibrant sound.
