Pedrito Martinez is a celebrated Cuban percussionist, vocalist, and bandleader renowned for his masterful fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, funk, and soul. Born in Havana, Cuba, Martinez’s deep-rooted connection to traditional rumba and Santería music has shaped his distinctive sound, blending rich cultural heritage with contemporary influences. Beginning his musical journey at a young age, he honed his craft in Havana’s vibrant music scene before relocating to New York City in 2003.
Martinez quickly became a sought-after collaborator, performing with iconic artists such as Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Paquito D’Rivera, and Bruce Springsteen. In 2013, he formed the Pedrito Martinez Group, showcasing his talents as both a bandleader and vocalist. The group’s eponymous debut album received critical acclaim for its energetic blend of Afro-Cuban percussion and jazz improvisation.
His 2019 album "Habana Dreams" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album, further cementing his status as a leading figure in Latin jazz.
