Martin Hayes is a highly influential Irish fiddler and composer, considered a pivotal figure in the revival of traditional Irish music. Born in 1962 in County Clare, Ireland, Hayes initially learned fiddle from his father, before studying with renowned musicians like Paddy McGrath and Peadar O’Riada. He rose to prominence as a founding member of the celebrated traditional group The Gloaming (2006-2018), alongside Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Dennis Cahill, and Thomas Bartlett.
Hayes' solo career showcases his distinctive, emotionally resonant playing style – characterized by nuanced phrasing, rhythmic drive, and a deep connection to the Clare fiddle tradition. He released his critically acclaimed debut solo album *Between the Worlds* in 1997, followed by *The Lonesome Touch* (2008) and *Dialogues* (2017), all exploring both traditional tunes and original compositions.
He received a prestigious Arts Council Fellowship in 1998 and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish Traditional Music Archive in 2015. Hayes’ influence extends beyond performance; he's known for his dedication to teaching and preserving Irish musical heritage.
