Larry Lampkin is a highly respected, though often under-recognized, American jazz percussionist and educator. Born in 1935 in Chicago, Illinois, Lampkin’s career spans over six decades, deeply rooted in the city’s vibrant jazz scene. He initially gained prominence as a drummer with the renowned Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the 1960s, a collective pivotal in fostering avant-garde and experimental jazz.

Lampkin’s style is characterized by its polyrhythmic complexity, textural exploration, and commitment to improvisation – moving beyond traditional timekeeping to become an integral melodic voice. He’s collaborated extensively with figures like Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, and Joseph Jarman, appearing on numerous recordings with these artists and others within the AACM orbit.

Beyond performance, Lampkin has dedicated himself to music education, holding teaching positions at institutions including the University of Illinois at Chicago and leading workshops globally. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Chicago Cultural Center in 2016 recognizing his significant contributions to jazz and community arts.
