Born in Norwich, England, Downes first gained recognition as part of the band Empirical, where he contributed significantly to their debut album that won 'Album of the Year' at the 2007 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

In 2009, he launched his solo career with the album "Golden," earning a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. His following albums "Quiet Tiger" and "Light From Old Stars" further established him as a leading voice in contemporary jazz music. He has also collaborated with leading musicians like Troyka, Julian Argüelles, and Django Bates.
