Experience JUNKO YAGAMI
JUNKO YAGAMI (八神純子) is a highly influential Japanese city pop singer and songwriter, active since her 1978 debut. Initially gaining recognition for covering American hits in Japanese, Yagami quickly transitioned to original compositions, becoming a defining voice of the 1980s Japanese music scene. Her style blends sophisticated jazz harmonies, funk grooves, and disco elements with emotionally resonant vocals – hallmarks of the city pop genre.
Yagami’s prolific career spans over 20 studio albums, with key releases including *Romantic Fantasy* (1980), *Cinderella Holiday* (1981), and *Double Rainbow* (1983). She frequently collaborated with prominent musicians like Tatsuro Yamashita and Kiyohiko Senba, both as a performer and songwriter – contributing significantly to their work as well.
While immensely popular domestically throughout the ‘80s, Yagami experienced a resurgence in international popularity in the 2010s thanks to online rediscovery of city pop. Her songs have been widely sampled in vaporwave and future funk productions, introducing her music to a new generation.
