Born in Havana, Cuba, he began his musical training at age five, deeply immersed in the traditions of *rumba*, *guaguancó*, and other foundational styles. Fernández immigrated to the United States in 1960 and quickly became a sought-after performer, collaborating with jazz luminaries like Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, and Mongo Santamaría.
His discography includes influential albums like “¡Ay Guantanamera!” (1973) and numerous sessions as a sideman. Fernández’s playing is characterized by its technical brilliance, dynamic energy, and profound understanding of Cuban musical heritage. Beyond performance, he dedicated decades to education, founding the Jesule Fernández Latin Percussion Ensemble and teaching at universities including UCLA and California State University Northridge.
