Experience Jeremy Deller
Jeremy Deller is a British artist renowned for blurring the lines between art, music, and social commentary. Emerging in the early 1990s, Deller initially gained prominence with acid house-inspired works like *English Magic* (1994), a vinyl record compiling samples and sounds representing British rave culture. He doesn’t *perform* music himself, but actively collaborates with musicians and utilizes music as a central element within his broader artistic practice.
A pivotal work, *Battle of Britain Day* (2004), saw Deller recreate a 1940s dance hall for veterans, accompanied by a live brass band playing wartime tunes. This exemplifies his interest in collective memory and national identity. He curated the British Pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale, featuring a recreation of Igor Stravinsky’s *The Rite of Spring* premiere alongside contemporary interpretations.
Deller’s projects often involve large-scale public participation and explore working-class culture. He received the Turner Prize in 2004 and was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2016.
