Experience Horse Lords
Horse Lords is a Washington D.C.-based instrumental rock quartet formed in 2009. Comprising Andrew Means (guitar), Max Eilbacher (guitar), Sam Haberman (bass), and Devin Caulfield (drums), the band is renowned for its complex, polyrhythmic compositions heavily influenced by West African guitar music – particularly the highlife style of artists like Ebo Taylor – alongside elements of post-punk, krautrock, and minimalist composition.
They gained significant attention with their 2014 album *Dives*, praised for its intricate interplay and hypnotic grooves. Subsequent releases, including *Intersections* (2016) and *Horse Lords* (2018), further solidified their unique sound and critical acclaim, earning features in publications like Pitchfork, The Wire, and NPR Music.
Their music deliberately avoids traditional song structures, favoring extended instrumental passages built around interlocking guitar lines and driving rhythms. Horse Lords have toured extensively across North America and Europe, sharing stages with artists like Battles and Tortoise. In 2023 they released *Complicated Business*, continuing their exploration of rhythmic complexity and textural soundscapes. They are signed to Northern Spy Records.
