Experience Getz

Stan Getz (1927-1991) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, widely recognized for popularizing bossa nova in the United States. Born Stanley Yancich in Philadelphia, he began professionally as a teenager and quickly gained recognition for his lyrical, warm tone – often described as “the sound of cool.”

Getz rose to prominence in the 1950s with bebop and then hard bop recordings, showcasing a remarkable harmonic sophistication. However, his 1962 album *Jazz Samba*, featuring João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, proved transformative. It launched bossa nova into mainstream American consciousness, earning him a Grammy Award. Subsequent collaborations with Gilberto, including *Getz/Gilberto* (1964) – featuring “The Girl from Ipanema” – cemented his association with the genre and won Album of the Year at the Grammys.

Throughout his career, Getz continued to explore diverse styles, from Latin jazz to fusion. He recorded extensively with prominent artists like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ella Fitzgerald.
