Francisco Mela is a highly respected Cuban-American drummer and composer, renowned for his innovative approach to Afro-Cuban jazz. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1975, Mela began his musical journey at age five, deeply immersed in the rich traditions of *rumba* and other Cuban percussion styles. He emigrated to the United States in 1990 and quickly established himself within the New York jazz scene.

Mela’s playing is characterized by its polyrhythmic complexity, dynamic range, and lyrical sensitivity. He seamlessly blends traditional Cuban elements with modern jazz improvisation. He’s a long-standing member of the Chucho Valdés quartet, contributing significantly to their Grammy-winning albums like *Live at the Blue Note* (2015).

Beyond his work with Valdés, Mela leads his own ensembles, showcasing original compositions that explore his Cuban heritage and contemporary jazz sensibilities. His albums as a leader include *Zapata* (2007) and *Lawine* (2018), receiving critical acclaim for their artistry and rhythmic depth.
