Emilio Santos is a highly respected Puerto Rican percussionist, composer, and bandleader renowned for his mastery of the *pandereta* (tambourine) and his contributions to *plena*, a traditional Puerto Rican musical genre. Born in San Juan in 1937, Santos began playing professionally at age 12, quickly becoming a sought-after musician within the island’s vibrant music scene.

He founded Pleneros de la 21 in 1969, arguably the most internationally recognized *plena* ensemble. This group revitalized the genre, introducing it to wider audiences globally through extensive touring and recordings. Santos’ arrangements skillfully blend traditional *plena* rhythms with jazz and other influences, creating a distinctive sound.

Throughout his career, Santos has received numerous accolades including a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship in 2009 – the nation’s highest honor in folk and traditional arts – recognizing his dedication to preserving and promoting Puerto Rican musical heritage.
