Colin John (born Colin John McBean, February 28, 1947 – November 23, 2023) was a British session drummer and songwriter, best known for his extensive work with Elton John. Beginning in 1969, he served as Elton’s primary drummer throughout the 1970s, appearing on landmark albums like *Goodbye Yellow Brick Road*, *Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy*, and *Honky Château*. Beyond drumming, John was a significant songwriting collaborator, co-writing several of Elton’s hits including “Daniel,” “Island Girl,” and “Philadelphia Freedom.”
His musical style blended a solid rock foundation with nuanced rhythmic sensibilities, crucial to shaping Elton John’s signature sound. He contributed significantly to arrangements, often adding percussion and melodic fills. Following his time with Elton John, he continued as a sought-after session musician, working with artists like Steely Dan and Eric Clapton.
John also pursued independent projects including the band Cactus (featuring ex-Vanilla Fudge members) and released a self-titled solo album in 1977.
