Carlos “Patato” Valdés (born Carlos Sarduy, February 18, 1926 – May 4, 2006) was a Cuban percussionist and a pivotal figure in the popularization of Afro-Cuban music in the United States. Beginning his career in Havana’s vibrant music scene, he mastered the *bongos* at a young age, becoming renowned for his incredibly fast and complex playing.
Valdés emigrated to New York City in 1953 and quickly became a sought-after session musician, performing with jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Machito. He notably co-led the band Los Siete Sabios with Mario Bauzá, further establishing Afro-Cuban rhythms within jazz frameworks.
“Patato” wasn't merely a performer; he innovated *bongos* technique, developing a unique tuning and playing style that emphasized clarity and rhythmic drive. He released numerous albums as a leader, including "Bongos in Flight" (1959) and "Patato & His Cubanos" (1960s series), showcasing his virtuosity.
