Experience Baaba Maal

Baaba Maal is a Senegalese singer and guitarist considered one of Africa’s most important and internationally recognized musicians. Born in Podor, Senegal in 1953, he initially studied at the École Nationale des Arts in Dakar before pursuing mechanical engineering in Paris – a path abandoned for music. Maal rose to prominence in the late 1980s with his band Daande Lenol, blending traditional Mandinka music with influences from Cuban son, jazz, and rock.

His distinctive vocal style, characterized by its soaring tenor and emotional depth, is often accompanied by the *ngoni* (a traditional lute) and percussion. He's a pivotal figure in the development of *Yolof modern*, a genre integrating traditional West African sounds with contemporary instrumentation.

Maal has collaborated extensively with artists like Peter Gabriel, Carl Perkins, and Hans Zimmer (contributing to the *Lion King* soundtrack). A dedicated humanitarian, he actively advocates for social justice and environmental issues through his music and the Jokko Initiative, focusing on renewable energy solutions for rural Africa.
