Automatic formed in 2017 in Los Angeles, California, comprised of Lola Damiani (vocals/synthesizer), James Piantoni (drums/programming), and Dean Tzenos (guitar/bass). The trio quickly gained attention for their distinctly 80s-inspired post-punk and new wave sound, often drawing comparisons to acts like Joy Division and The Cure.

Their self-titled debut EP (2018) established their atmospheric, driving aesthetic, followed by the critically acclaimed full-length *Signal* (2019) on Run For Cover Records. *Signal* explored themes of isolation and anxiety through layered synths, propulsive rhythms, and Damiani’s emotive vocals.

Automatic’s breakthrough came with their second album, *Excess* (2023), released via Stones Throw Records. *Excess* expanded their sonic palette while retaining their core sound, earning widespread praise from publications like Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound. They've toured extensively supporting artists like Interpol and Cold Cave, solidifying their presence within the contemporary darkwave scene. Their music is characterized by minimalist arrangements, a focus on texture, and a captivating stage presence.
