The Stone Pony, located in Asbury Park, New Jersey, opened its doors on February 18, 1974, founded by Jack Roig and partners. Originally conceived as a small bar with live entertainment, the venue quickly became a cornerstone of the Jersey Shore music scene. The building itself is a modest, single-story structure with a distinctive pale yellow exterior.

Bruce Springsteen’s association with The Stone Pony is central to its fame; he performed there frequently in the early stages of his career and continues to make surprise appearances. Other notable performers include Jon Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, and Patti Smith. The venue hosted a benefit concert for victims of Superstorm Sandy in 2012 featuring Bruce Springsteen and other artists.

The Stone Pony primarily features rock, blues, and alternative music acts. It operates both as an indoor venue with a capacity of approximately 300 standing or 175 seated, and an outdoor stage that can accommodate larger crowds during the summer months. A summer stage expansion in 2021 increased outdoor capacity to around 3,000. The venue maintains a full bar and offers food service. Its historical significance stems from its role in launching the careers of numerous musicians and fostering a strong sense of community within the local music landscape.
