Experience Sónar Festival
Sónar, held annually in Barcelona, Spain, is a pioneering festival dedicated to advancing creativity through music, technology and art. Founded in 1994 by Ricard Robles, Sónar initially emerged as a counterpoint to the mainstream Ibiza dance scene, focusing on experimental electronic music and showcasing emerging Catalan artists alongside international acts. Over its history, it’s grown into a globally recognised event attracting over 100,000 attendees.
The festival uniquely occupies two main venues: Sónar by Day events are spread across locations in the city centre – notably within the architectural context of MACBA (Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art) – while Sónar by Night takes place at the Fira Montjuïc exhibition centre. This latter venue’s industrial spaces provide a distinctive backdrop for immersive audiovisual experiences.
Sónar consistently features a diverse program encompassing techno, house, ambient, experimental electronica, hip-hop and increasingly, visual arts installations and digital media. Past performers include Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Björk and Jean-Michel Jarre. Beyond music, Sónar+dev focuses on innovation and technology with workshops and exhibitions.
