Experience Registan Square

Registan Square in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, isn’t a music *venue* in the traditional sense, but a breathtaking historical complex frequently used for large-scale cultural performances including musical events. Constructed between the 15th and 17th centuries, it comprises three magnificent madrasahs: Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417-1420), Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619-1636), and Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646-1660). These structures exemplify Timurid Renaissance architecture, showcasing intricate mosaic tilework – particularly the striking depictions of animals on Sher-Dor, a unique departure from traditional Islamic art.

Historically a bustling marketplace and site for public announcements, Registan now hosts spectacular sound & light shows and occasional concerts. Performances lean towards classical Uzbek music, folk ensembles featuring *dutar* and *tanbur*, and increasingly, contemporary interpretations blending traditional sounds with modern arrangements. The sheer scale of the square – capable of accommodating thousands – combined with its awe-inspiring backdrop creates an unparalleled acoustic experience; sound reverberates beautifully off the monumental facades.
