Experience Reading Minster Of St Mary The Virgin

Reading Minster, officially the Minster Church of St Mary the Virgin, is a historic parish church in Reading, Berkshire, with origins tracing back to the 8th century, though the present building largely dates from the Perpendicular Gothic period (15th & 16th centuries). Founded by Bishop Eadred, it holds significant historical weight as one of England’s oldest ecclesiastical sites – linked to King Henry I and Catherine of Aragon’s funeral in 1536.

Architecturally, the Minster boasts a magnificent fan-vaulted ceiling, a rare feature in parish churches, and notable stained glass including work by William Morris. Beyond its religious function, Reading Minster has become a renowned music venue. It frequently hosts choral performances (particularly its renowned choir), classical concerts, and increasingly, contemporary musical genres like jazz and folk.

Its exceptional acoustics and atmospheric setting differentiate it from traditional concert halls. The Minster’s size allows for large-scale orchestral performances while retaining an intimate feel. Unlike many venues, performances directly support the Minster's preservation and community outreach programs. Regular organ recitals showcase its impressive four-manual Harrison & Harrison organ.
