Experience Pianos: Showroom
Pianos, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City, first opened its doors in 1999. Originally conceived as a showroom for vintage pianos—hence the name—the space quickly evolved into a multifaceted performance venue. The building itself dates back to the late 19th century, retaining much of its original architectural character including exposed brick walls and high ceilings.
Pianos operates across two distinct spaces: the larger downstairs room and the more intimate upstairs “showroom.” The downstairs area hosts a wider range of acts, while the upstairs maintains a focus on singer-songwriters and smaller ensembles. The venue is known for showcasing emerging artists across genres including indie rock, electronic music, hip-hop, and alternative pop.
Throughout its history, Pianos has served as an important launching pad for numerous bands now considered prominent in the independent music scene. It regularly hosts showcases during CMJ Music Marathon and other industry events. A notable feature is its relatively small capacity – approximately 150 people downstairs and 75 upstairs – fostering an intimate connection between performers and audience members. Pianos continues to operate as both a live music venue and a functioning piano showroom.
