Experience Indiana University Auditorium
Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington, Indiana, opened in 1941 as a New Deal-era Public Works Administration project, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the arts at IU and within the state. Designed by architects William B. Ittner and Andrew Kanter, its Art Deco style features a grand, symmetrical façade and a stunning interior boasting exceptional acoustics – intentionally designed for operatic performance.
Originally conceived to host large-scale university events and traveling Broadway shows, the Auditorium has since welcomed a diverse range of performers including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Yo-Yo Ma, and numerous Broadway touring productions. It’s particularly renowned for its presentations of classical music, opera, ballet, and world-class jazz artists.
Unique features include its massive stage (one of the largest in the Midwest), an original 1941 Wurlitzer organ meticulously restored, and seating for over 3,200 patrons. The Auditorium isn’t just a performance space; it's a historical landmark contributing significantly to Bloomington’s vibrant cultural landscape and serving as a vital link to the performing arts tradition at Indiana University. It continues to be a premier venue for nationally and internationally acclaimed artists.
