Experience Háskólabíó

Háskólabíó, located on the University of Iceland campus in Reykjavik, is a beloved and historically significant music venue. Originally constructed in 1953 as a student theatre and cinema – hence “bíó” meaning cinema – it quickly became a central hub for Icelandic cultural life. While retaining its original mid-century modern architectural style with notable concrete detailing, it transitioned into primarily a music venue in the 1980s.

Háskólabíó is renowned for fostering emerging Icelandic artists alongside internationally recognized acts, spanning genres like indie rock, post-punk, electronic music, and occasionally folk and experimental sounds. It’s been crucial to the development of Iceland’s vibrant music scene, hosting early performances by bands like Sigur Rós and Of Monsters and Men.

Unlike many polished concert halls, Háskólabíó maintains an intimate, raw atmosphere with excellent acoustics. Its relatively small capacity (around 450 standing/700 seated) creates a close connection between performers and audience. The venue also features a bar and often hosts art exhibitions alongside musical events, contributing to its multifaceted cultural role within the university community and beyond.
