Harpa Concert Hall, officially Harpa Norðurljós (Northern Lights), is Reykjavik’s landmark cultural and conference centre, opened in May 2011 after a period of significant financial challenges during the Icelandic financial crisis – its construction representing a symbol of hope for recovery. Designed by Henning Larsen and Batteríið Architects, its striking glass façade is inspired by Iceland’s basalt columns and the Northern Lights themselves, utilizing custom-made glass panels created by the artist Olafur Eliasson.

Harpa houses multiple halls, including the 1,800-seat Eldborg (the largest), Silfurberg, and smaller recital spaces. It hosts a diverse range of performances spanning classical music (Iceland Symphony Orchestra is a resident), opera, pop, rock, jazz, and world music. It’s also a key venue for Reykjavík Jazz Festival and Iceland Airwaves.

Beyond concerts, Harpa features restaurants, shops, and offers stunning views of the harbour and mountains. Its acoustics are highly regarded, specifically designed to accommodate both amplified and unamplified performances. The building's commitment to accessibility and its central role in fostering Icelandic musical talent distinguish it as a uniquely significant cultural institution.
