Harlem Jazz Fest, officially known as the Apollo Theater, is a historic music hall and cultural landmark located at 253 West 125th Street in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Originally constructed in 1913–1914 as a dream of Harvey Kriegel, it initially operated as Hurtig & Seamon’s New Burlesque Theatre before transitioning to focus on African American performers. Renamed the Apollo Theater in 1934 under new ownership, it quickly became a pivotal venue during the Harlem Renaissance and the era of segregation, providing opportunities for Black artists often excluded from other performance spaces.

The theater’s architecture reflects a blend of styles, notably Art Deco elements added during renovations in the 1930s. The Apollo is renowned for its “Amateur Night,” launched in 1934, which has served as a launching pad for numerous successful artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and James Brown. Performances span jazz, blues, soul, R&B, hip-hop and gospel.

Significant events include benefit concerts and performances by iconic figures like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. In 2024, it continues to host live performances and remains a vital community hub offering tours and educational programs. The Apollo Theater Foundation supports artistic innovation and preservation of its legacy through these initiatives.
