Experience Edward A. Hatch Memorial Shell

The Edward A. Hatch Memorial Shell, affectionately known as the Hatch Shell, is a historic bandstand and performance space located on the Charles River Esplanade in Boston, Massachusetts. Constructed in 1940 as a Public Works Administration (WPA) project, it replaced an earlier, smaller shell built in 1928. Designed by architect Eugene J. Lambert, the Art Deco structure features a distinctive curved concrete shell intended to amplify sound naturally – a crucial element before modern amplification systems.

For over eight decades, the Hatch Shell has been a central hub for free public concerts and events, particularly during the summer months. The Boston Pops Orchestra’s annual Fourth of July concert is its most famous tradition, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees and broadcast nationally. Beyond classical music, the Shell hosts diverse genres including jazz, rock, pop, and world music performances as part of the Hatch Shell Concert Series.

Its open-air design and expansive lawn seating create a uniquely democratic atmosphere. While lacking permanent seating, the venue offers stunning views of the Boston skyline and the Charles River, making it a beloved landmark and vital component of Boston’s cultural landscape.
