Originally opened in 1973 as the Playhouse, it was renamed in 2016 to honour former Premier John Dunstan, a strong advocate for the arts. While hosting a diverse range of performances – including theatre, dance and comedy – the Dunstan Playhouse is particularly renowned for its exceptional acoustics making it a favoured venue for classical music, jazz, and contemporary instrumental ensembles. It frequently hosts performances during the Adelaide Festival and Adelaide Fringe.

Unlike larger concert halls, the Dunstan Playhouse offers an intimate 834-seat capacity providing close proximity to performers. Recent upgrades include improved seating and bar facilities.
