Experience Dartington Hall
Dartington Hall, nestled in the South Devon countryside, is a historic estate and renowned arts venue with a rich history dating back to 1384. Originally a medieval manor, it was dramatically remodelled in the Arts and Crafts style between 1925-1932 by William Weir, creating the distinctive asymmetrical facade seen today – a notable example of progressive architecture for its time.
Beyond its architectural significance, Dartington Hall is celebrated for pioneering modern music performance in the UK. In the 1920s & 30s, Leonard Elmhirst and Dorothy Elmhirst established a Summer School of Music here, attracting leading composers like Igor Stravinsky and Béla Bartók, fostering early performances of contemporary classical music.
Today, The Great Hall continues this tradition hosting diverse musical genres including jazz, world music, folk, baroque and contemporary classical. It’s known for its exceptional acoustics and intimate atmosphere – seating approximately 350 – offering a uniquely close experience compared to larger concert halls. The estate also features gardens, a shop and restaurant enhancing visitor experience. Dartington Hall remains a vital hub for artistic innovation and community engagement within Devon's cultural landscape.
