Experience Birds Hill Provincial Park

Birds Hill Provincial Park, located near Oakbank, Manitoba, is a vast 8,300-hectare park with a rich history dating back to the Red River Settlement era. Originally utilized by Indigenous peoples for hunting and gathering, the area later became significant for its agricultural land. While primarily a natural recreation space offering camping, hiking, and equestrian trails, it’s uniquely known for hosting large-scale events – most notably, the annual Winnipeg Folk Festival.

The festival site within the park isn't defined by permanent architecture; instead, it utilizes the natural amphitheater formed by the landscape. Established in 1974, the Winnipeg Folk Festival has become a cornerstone of Manitoba’s music scene, showcasing roots, folk, bluegrass, world music and increasingly diverse genres. Unlike traditional indoor venues, Birds Hill offers an immersive outdoor experience deeply connected to nature.

Its defining feature is the community-focused atmosphere fostered over decades of hosting this event – emphasizing workshops alongside mainstage performances. The park’s size allows for multiple stages and extensive camping facilities directly on site, creating a multi-day cultural immersion unavailable at most festival locations.
