Experience Dead Oceans
Dead Oceans is an independent record label founded in 2000 in Bloomington, Indiana by Jed Hilly. Originally conceived as a means to release music by Hilly’s own band, The American Dollar, the label quickly expanded to include other artists. Early releases focused on indie rock and lo-fi aesthetics.
Throughout the 2000s, Dead Oceans cultivated a reputation for artist development and a curated roster. Notable signings included Built to Spill, who released albums *You in Reverse* (2006) and *There's Nothing Wrong With Love* (2009) with the label. Other significant artists who have released work via Dead Oceans include Beach House, whose association began with *Teen Dream* (2010), and Sharon Van Etten, releasing *Tramp* (2011) and subsequent albums with them.
The label’s catalog encompasses a broad range of genres within the independent music sphere, including indie folk, dream pop, experimental rock, and ambient music. Dead Oceans has received critical acclaim for its consistently high-quality releases and commitment to supporting long-term artist relationships. They maintain offices in New York City and Los Angeles as of 2023 and continue to operate as an independent entity.
