Religious music, encompassing gospel, Christian contemporary music (CCM), and sacred hymns, boasts origins deeply rooted in ancient liturgical traditions – Gregorian chants emerging in the 6th century being a prime example. Initially inseparable from worship practices, its core characteristic is expressing faith, devotion, and spiritual themes through lyrical content and often, harmonic structures designed to evoke reverence. Early forms were largely vocal and a cappella.

The genre dramatically evolved with the advent of recording technology. The 20th century saw the rise of gospel as a distinctly African American musical expression blending spirituals, blues, and jazz – artists like Mahalia Jackson (“Move On Up a Little Higher,” 1948) becoming foundational. CCM emerged in the 1960s/70s mirroring contemporary pop and rock styles (think Petra, Amy Grant’s *Age to Age*, 1992).

Today, religious music is globally diverse; Korean praise & worship, Latin American congregational songs, and various indigenous Christian musical expressions flourish. Its impact extends beyond religious circles; gospel heavily influenced early rock & roll and soul music. CCM frequently crosses over into mainstream charts demonstrating its broad appeal and cultural influence.
