The origins of jungle can be traced back to the UK's underground rave scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. As raves became more popular, DJs began experimenting with different styles and sounds. One pivotal moment in jungle's development was when producers started speeding up breakbeats from old funk and soul records. This technique added an intense energy to the music that became synonymous with jungle.

Artists like Goldie, Roni Size & Reprazent, LTJ Bukem, and Photek played significant roles in pushing drum and bass into the mainstream.

Some notable artists associated with jungle include DJ Hype, Shy FX & T Power, Congo Natty (previously known as Rebel MC), Aphrodite, DJ Zinc, Andy C., Bad Company UK (later renamed Bad Company), Ed Rush & Optical, among others.
