Jungle

Jungle Concerts

Jungle is a genre of electronic music that originated in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom. It emerged as a fusion of various genres, including breakbeat, rave, reggae, and hip-hop. Jungle is characterized by its fast-paced beats, heavy basslines, chopped-up breakbeats, and prominent use of samples.

The origins of jungle can be traced back to the UK's underground rave scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. As raves became more popular, DJs began experimenting with different styles and sounds. One pivotal moment in jungle's development was when producers started speeding up breakbeats from old funk and soul records. This technique added an intense energy to the music that became synonymous with jungle.

One key characteristic of jungle is its use of complex drum patterns created through sampling and sequencing techniques. These intricate rhythms are often layered with deep sub-basslines and atmospheric soundscapes. The genre also incorporates elements of Jamaican dub culture, such as reggae-style basslines and vocal samples.

As jungle evolved over time, it diversified into various subgenres like drum and bass (D&B), which gained mainstream popularity in the mid-1990s. D&B retained many elements of jungle but incorporated more melodic elements and faster tempos. Artists like Goldie, Roni Size & Reprazent, LTJ Bukem, and Photek played significant roles in pushing drum and bass into the mainstream.

Some notable artists associated with jungle include DJ Hype, Shy FX & T Power, Congo Natty (previously known as Rebel MC), Aphrodite, DJ Zinc, Andy C., Bad Company UK (later renamed Bad Company), Ed Rush & Optical, among others. These artists not only shaped the sound of jungle but also contributed to its evolution into drum and bass.

Several albums have had a significant impact on the global music scene within the jungle genre.
