Japanese music, often referred to simply as “J-Music” (though a broad term encompassing *all* Japanese music), has a complex and fascinating history. Its roots lie in ancient gagaku (court music) and folk traditions like *min'yō*, heavily influenced by Chinese and Korean musical styles. Post-WWII, American popular music – jazz, rock and roll, and pop – profoundly impacted Japanese artists, leading to the development of *kayōkyoku*, a sentimental ballad style dominating the 1960s & 70s.
The 1980s saw the rise of City Pop – sophisticated, jazz-infused pop exemplified by artists like Tatsuro Yamashita ( *For You* album) and Mariya Takeuchi (*Variety* album, whose "Plastic Love" experienced a viral resurgence decades later). Simultaneously, visual kei emerged with bands like X Japan pushing theatrical performance and hard rock.
