Israeli music, often broadly categorized but increasingly defined as a distinct genre, draws heavily from Mizrahi Jewish traditions originating in North Africa and the Middle East. Its roots lie in the 1950s and 60s with the mass immigration of Jews to Israel, bringing diverse musical styles – flamenco, Arabic maqam, Greek rembetiko – which blended with Western pop influences. Early characteristics included emotionally charged vocals, often dealing with themes of longing for home (both physical and spiritual), love, and social commentary. Instrumentation frequently featured oud, kanun, and darbuka alongside guitars and drums.
The 1970s saw a rise in “Israeli rock” incorporating these Mizrahi elements. Artists like Ofra Haza achieved international recognition with albums like *Shir HaShirim* (1984), blending traditional Yemenite melodies with electronic sounds. In the 1990s & 2000s, artists such as Idan Raichel Project further popularized the sound globally through collaborations fusing Israeli music with diverse world music traditions.
More recently, a new generation is experimenting with electronic music production alongside traditional instrumentation, creating a vibrant contemporary sound.
