Footwork is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago, Illinois, in the 1990s. It is characterized by its fast-paced beats, intricate footwork dance style, and unique sampling techniques. Footwork evolved from the earlier Chicago house and juke music scenes but developed its own distinct sound and culture.

The origins of footwork can be traced back to the late 1980s when DJs in Chicago began experimenting with faster tempos and incorporating elements of hip-hop, funk, and soul into their mixes. The name "footwork" refers to the energetic dance style associated with this genre, which involves quick foot movements and intricate steps performed at high speeds.

One of the key characteristics of footwork is its use of rapid-fire drum patterns known as "juking" or "juke beats." These beats are typically around 160-180 BPM (beats per minute) and feature syncopated rhythms created using drum machines like the Roland TR-808 or TR-909. The tracks are often built around repetitive vocal samples or chopped-up snippets from various sources such as old jazz records or popular songs.

As footwork gained popularity in underground clubs and parties in Chicago's South Side neighborhoods, it started to attract attention from producers outside of the city. One significant artist associated with this genre is DJ Rashad, who became one of footwork's most influential figures. His album "Double Cup" released in 2013 received critical acclaim for pushing the boundaries of footwork by incorporating elements from other genres like R&B and experimental electronic music.

Another notable artist is Jlin, whose debut album "Dark Energy" released in 2015 garnered widespread praise for its innovative approach to footwork. Jlin's complex rhythms combined with haunting melodies brought a fresh perspective to the genre.

Footwork has also had a significant impact on the global music scene. Its influence can be heard in various genres such as trap, grime, and even mainstream pop music.
