Dangdut, originating in Indonesia in the mid-20th century, is a vibrant and hugely popular genre blending Indonesian folk music (like *kroncong* and *gamelan*) with Hindustani classical music, Arabic melodies, and Western rock influences. Its name itself is onomatopoeic, mimicking the sound of the large Indian *dhol* drum frequently used in early performances.
Key characteristics include a driving, syncopated rhythm (often 4/4 time), prominent use of the *dangdut* beat created by the drums, electric guitars, and synthesizers, and often emotionally charged vocals focusing on themes of love, life struggles, and social commentary.
