Computers & Internet, often called “vaporwave adjacent” or “net music,” emerged in the early 2010s, largely online, as a reaction to and critique of consumer culture, late capitalism, and the aesthetics of the early internet. Its origins lie in sample-based music, building upon practices from genres like plunderphonics and hypnagogic pop. Key characteristics include heavily processed samples – often sourced from 80s/90s corporate muzak, Windows 95 sounds, Japanese city pop, and smooth jazz – slowed tempos, looping, reverb, and glitch effects. A strong visual component is integral; artwork frequently features Roman busts, early CGI graphics, and nostalgic imagery evoking a bygone digital era.

While not traditionally album-focused, artists like Macintosh Plus (Vektroid) with *Floral Shoppe* (2011) are considered foundational. Blank Banshee’s *Blank Banshee 0* (2011) also significantly shaped the sound. Subsequent artists like Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1 further explored the sampling techniques.
